Building a Safe and Ethical AI Future for East Africa

Who We Are

AI Safety East Africa (AISEA) is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to equipping students, professionals, and policymakers with the technical knowledge and governance expertise required to develop, regulate, and implement safe, ethical, and inclusive AI systems.

As AI rapidly transforms economies and societies, East Africa remains largely a consumer rather than a producer of AI technologies. AISEA seeks to change this by empowering local talent and shaping policies that ensure AI benefits everyone.

Our Mission

AISEA aims to build AI capacity in East Africa by equipping students, professionals, and policymakers with the knowledge and skills to develop safe and responsible AI systems through structured training, mentorship, and hands-on learning.

Our Vision

To establish a thriving AI ecosystem in East Africa where collaboration with local and international AI communities fosters innovation, ethical AI development, and responsible governance, ensuring inclusive and sustainable AI growth.

Our Core Focus Areas

We work across four key areas to shape AI’s impact in East Africa:

Training & Capacity Building

Delivering AI safety education using the globally recognized AI Safety Fundamentals Curriculum to equip students, professionals, and policymakers with practical knowledge.

AI Policy & Governance Advocacy

Partnering with governments, academic institutions, and private sector leaders to influence AI regulations, ethical guidelines, and long-term safety measures in East Africa.

Community & Mentorship

Creating a network of AI practitioners, researchers, and policymakers through mentorship programs, collaborative projects, and thought leadership initiatives.
